Heatwave in Punjab: Schools Consider Early Summer Vacation to Protect Students

As the summer in Punjab continues to rise, there is advice for the schools across the province by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The advice highlights the early vacations to persist the heatwave in Punjab.

An increase in the potential temperature of 4 to 7 degrees has been warned by the PDMA, and to keep the health of staff and students, early vacations have been declared.

According to the Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, significant heat will surge at the start of the month, including dehydration, heat strokes, and other heat-related emergencies.
The Following are some instructions for Punjab schools to alleviate the issues caused by heat surges:

  • Altering school working hours to avoid peak heat periods
  • Declaring early summer holidays if temperatures continue to rise
  • Suspension of all outdoor sports and physical activities
  • Ensuring uninterrupted availability of clean, cold drinking water
  • Maintaining functional ventilation, fans, and cooling systems in classrooms
  • Advising students to wear loose, light-coloured clothing
  • Setting up first aid stations with staff trained to handle heat-related emergencies

The directive emphasizes that preventive measures must be enforced without delay. District administrations have also been instructed to coordinate closely with PDMA and provide real-time updates through local disaster management authorities.

The meeting served as a joint meeting between the Environment Department and PDMA, handled by Raja Jahangir Anwar and Irfan Ali Kathia. Different departments, including health, irrigation, agriculture, and education, participated.
